Parent Support

Since 1994, Childhaven has served the needs of children and family members by providing advocacy services to families in need. Advocates maintain regular contact with families to ensure that they have access to supports they need such as case management, in-home services, parent education, psychiatry, therapy, as well as assisting them with any other needs like housing, public assistance, protective orders, domestic violence intervention, and transportation.

In 2016, Childhaven’s parent support program began teaching the Nurturing Parenting curriculum to the San Juan County community, serving close to 100 parents and their children annually. The curriculum is evidence-based and focuses on areas that cause child maltreatment:

  • Building nurturing parenting skills as alternatives to punitive child-rearing practices;
  • Development of empathy, self-awareness, self-worth and empowerment;
  • Disciplining with dignity;
  • Developing appropriate family roles;
  • Teaching age-appropriate expectations of children’s development.

Parenting classes are offered year-round in group or individual sessions, and are free. Food, child care and transportation are also provided at no cost to families. Read our brochure. For more information, please contact our Parent Support Worker at (505) 592-0636.
