Foster Parenting

One of Childhaven's goals is to increase the number of quality foster homes available to children and adolescents in San Juan County. Annually many children must wait months for a foster home to open up so that they may move out of our shelter and into a loving home.

Childhaven wants to eliminate this waiting period. You can help. You do not have to be rich, young or married to be a foster parent. You do have to want to provide a safe, stable and nurturing environment for a child.

A foster parent is an adult who cares for a child temporarily until he/she can return to her biological parents or until he/she is released for adoption. Opening your heart and home to a child offers that child the benefit of a safe and loving place to call home for a period of time. Foster parenting offers several benefits to the parents as well.

Foster Care Philosophy
Childhaven’s Treatment Foster Care program serves children, ages 3-17 who are experiencing severe emotional disturbances. The program philosophy is to provide client centered practice, utilizing a Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach to assist in the healing process. The Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy modality is client and family centered as it teaches both the client and the parent recovery and resiliency skills. Children are taught new skills to cope with their traumatic experiences, to include emotion regulation, stress management, personal safety, and coping with future traumatic events. Parents are taught how to encourage the use of these skills in their children, as well as parenting skills.

Benefits of Becoming a Foster Parent
The most important benefit to becoming a foster parent is your ability to make a difference in the life of a child and in the community. Law Enforcement may remove children from their biological homes for varied reasons. You, as a foster parent, can serve a a good role model for a child undergoing upheaval. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped a child during a difficult time in his or her life.
